Review For Eng
By Brent
No other time in human history have we seen more apathy for human life than that of the Holocaust. Poland saw the worst of these crimes to humanity in the form of two infamous concentration camps--Auschwitz and Birkenau. Birkenau was an extension of Auschwitz, also knows as Auschwitz II, and is where the worst atrocities occurred until the end of WWII.
In the book "I was Doctor Mengele's Assistant," the reader is taken back in time to relive some of the worst deeds done in these camps through the perspective of a German educated Jewish doctor named Miklos Nyiszli. Nyiszli was picked to be one of the assistants to a German doctor named Dr. Mengele, who was performing experiments on the Jewish prisoners, mostly children. When Nyiszli departed the train that he, his wife and daughter had arrived in, a man in a white lab coat met him. Not knowing the nature of this man's questions, Nyiszli said he was a doctor and was taken to perform one of the worst duties in camp: performing autopsies on the prisoners that had been killed by the experiments of Dr. Mengele.
Throughout this true account of the Birkenau camp, we gain perspective of the lives of these prisoners. Nyiszli tells us the day-to-day activities of the camp and offers the internal battle that rose in the workers of the camp, who were responsible for taking care of the bodies of all the prisoners that were murdered in the gas chambers on the camp.
The horrors of the camp were not only those of the gas chamber. During this time of the war, the German Armies were running low on supplies and needed ways to gather new supplies and revenue to fight the ongoing battles. To gain this revenue, the Jewish workers were sent in after the gassings to shave the hair off the women and pull all of the gold teeth of the deceased.
We are given firsthand accounts of the different experiments that are performed on the prisoners of Auschwitz and Auschwitz II. Dr. Mengele does horrific tests on twins, mostly those who are women and children, in an effort to find the key to the genetic code, which will help to further the Nazi cause.
The book takes us all the way through the end of World War II, and we are able to see Nyiszli journey from Auschwitz II. His journey home was as eventful as his trip to the camp. We can see how Nyiszli learns and grows through this journey home. This book was sealed with his testimony. The end of the book leaves you with a sense of emotional empathy that will stay with you forever.
This is a must read for everyone! This book moved both my mind and my spirit. It is imperative that we learn from the mistakes of those who came before us, and there is no better way than those accounts of people that lived it. History must never again see the kind of human cruelty and disregard for life displayed by the Nazis.

A very moving, disturbing account of a horrible tragedy
By AnnaB's Mom
I went to Auschwitz in Poland last week for the first time and my friend bought this book at their store. I had NO IDEA what I was about to read when I picked this up, I read it cover to cover in a day...it's so disturbing to think that this truly happened to so many innocent victims. The author wrote this book shortly after his liberation and his eye witness account is amazing to say the least. This book left me stunned with sadness to hear about all the horrible things that occurred. When you read the numbers of innocent victims murdered in the death camps, it's a big number but when the author breaks it down to 20,000 victims murdered a day at some times with such vivid detail it's unreal to imagine...

Eye opening
By The Highlander
I picked this book up last year while traveling in Poland with a group of teachers learning about the Holocaust. It is an eye opening book that gives the reader a first hand account of what the Sonderkommandos went through on a daily basis. A couple chapters are graphic, especially chapters 7-8, if I recall the chapter numbers correctly, that describes the process those sent to the gas chambers went through. I was able to have a set of these books purchased for my Holocaust class from Poland, as they are cheaper to buy and ship here than to buy in the States outright. The book describes selections, brief description of why human experiments, role of the Sonderkommando in the camp, as well as the uprising in October 1944. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn more about the Sonderkommandos and the Auschwitz death camp.
