Thomas M. Disch is one of the overlooked masters of science fiction, and Camp Concentration is one of his finest novels. The unlikely hero of this piece is Louis Sacchetti, an overweight poet who's serving a five-year prison term for being a "conchie," or conscientious objector, to the ongoing war being fought by the United States. Three months into his sentence, Sacchetti is mysteriously taken from prison and brought to Camp Archimedes, an underground compound run by General Humphrey Haast. This is the so-called "camp concentration" of the book's title, a strange oubliette where inmates are given a drug that will raise their intelligence to astounding levels, though it will also kill them in a matter of months.

Sacchetti's job is to chronicle the goings-on at Archimedes in a daily journal that is sent to Haast and other select members of the project. Through his writings, readers get to know the various characters that inhabit the camp, geniuses whose intellectual fires burn brightly even while their bodies slowly go cold. Although these latter-day Einsteins are supposed to be thinking up new ways of killing the enemy, most of the inmates are instead focusing their studies on alchemy, which Haast hopes will allow them to discover the secret of immortality.

Camp Concentration is one of those SF books that falls squarely into the "literature" category both for the eloquence of Disch's writing and the timelessness of his ruminations on life and war. This is a thoughtful novel that offers insights into human existence, and it will likely stay with readers long after they have turned the last page. Ursula K. A fascinating premise, but a narrative that bogs down

Thomas Disch has written an unusual and nightmarish tale of war, disease, and government skullduggery that makes for fascinating reading-- most of the way through. It is frightening but true that his premise that the government might secretly develop and test a disease organism that augments intelligence but then kills seems more credible today than it did when he wrote the story decades ago.
However, as the story develops, Disch's narrative slips further and further into a succession of obscure literary, philosophical, and religious allusions that only those steeped deeply in arcane intellectual works will understand, let alone appreciate. There are lengthy passages that I found frustratingly obscure, and overall, I felt that in the last part of the novel the work loses its original sharp edge and intensity. Perhaps for the chosen few with the proper intellectual pedigree to connect with the veritable cavalcade of allusions, quotations, and metaphors, the work will seem far more meaningful. For the rest of us, it ends up being an interesting but in some ways unsatisfying read.

Big Ambitions, Partly Achieved

It's evident that Disch set out with the goal in mind of writing a more "literary" sort of science fiction novel than was or is prevalent in the genre. He gets about 4/5s of the way there, actually.

Disch's verbal abilities and his mental dexterity are commendable, and are well displayed here. He is less successful at constructing plot intricacies, character development, and dramatic structure. Though it ties in with the plot, Disch's Pynchonesque linguistic display, which reaches a crescendo in the early part of Book Two, come off as the product of a young writer having fun with a highlighter and an unabridged OED.
It's interesting that this novel was published about half a year after Daniel Keyes came out with a very similar book later adapted into a play and then a movie . The idea had been around since Keyes first wrote the novella version in 1959. The idea is basically the same. Scientists come up with a formula that makes brain processes accelerate, the subjects become brilliant for a while and then the unforeseen consequences set in. Charly returns to his mentally retarded state, Sacchetti lapses into the final stages of a degenerative disease (syphilis).
Disch does introduce some interesting ideas along the way, however. The effect of syphilis, in particular,on the artistic mind, has long been a subject of conjecture. Though some arguments are a lot shakier (Beethoven) than others (de Mauppassant, Nietszche), the subject is definitely open to debate. Disch works such speculation into his story quite effectively. There is also the matter of the way in which the agent (The Palladine) is spread through the surface population (by sexual means) by a rebellious researcher. It does rather spookily prefigure the coming aids epidemic, and probably had some influence on later novelists such as Crichton and King.
There is enough talent, brains and imagination on display here to appeal to "general" readers as well as Sci-Fi aficionados. It's at times intentionally obfuscating, but that's confined to a relatively brief section as the narrator undergoes a mental breakdown. The rest is highly readable. I will definitely seek out more works by the author.

Not as good as The Trailer!

Ever see a trailer for a movie ,see the film and wish it were more like the trailer. This is one of those. The blurb on the above paperback really grabbed me, so i bought the book. The book is pretty good but it IS weird .The whole thing is mainly epistolic( told in the form of letters or in this case diary entries )and breaks down the middle section when he is in a state of syphilitic dementia.In fact, it so completely captured his rambling dementia that I basically had skip over that part. On balance though, I liked it ;the ending redeemed the craziness and in fact expalined it.

Highly recommend it! Thank you

This is a MUST for EVERYONE! There is a morning meditation and an even mediation and each are about 25 minutes long. I make an effort to the morning mediation/chakra clearing every morning because I work with a lot of different people and I want to clear and empower myself and "step back and let Spirit lead the way". Whew - what a blessing it's been to clear and activate and know that going through my day - the Divine is working through me - it's reduced my stress level! And, the evening mediation/charkra clearing is one that I try to do as often as possible - especially if there have been difficult circumstances throughout the day - for this mediation clears and removes the negative aspects of the day and creates a peaceful night's sleep. Highly recommend it! Thank you, Doreen!

Highly Recommend!

I absolutely love the variety of different tips that she gives on chakra clearing, how to clear the chakras of others, how chakra clearing has affected both her life and the lives of others, and useful information about the chakras. My favorite method is meditation, I feel so much better after balancing my chakras, and I also incorporate chanting. She didn't go into too much depth with chanting in this book, but I had done research on chakras before purchasing this book so I knew which sounds where associated with each chakra already. I would highly recommend this book, at least as a starting point! It brushes over several techniques, so if you find that you want to dig deeper into something specific, you should seek additional resources, but this is a great starting point. If you read this, thank you for writing this book Doreen. Very well done!

CD is worthwhile

I have to say that I haven't read the book. My mother got it for me and although I was skeptical of the CD, I decided to listen to it one day while driving (my only alone time)and was impressed! Even while driving and having to have my focus on the road, I was able to go through the steps. I found the music and voice to be calm and soothing, which isn't always the case with these things. I didn't have any expectation going into it, but right away I noticed myself freely and openly meditating on some chakras, and others I felt like there was a big "do not enter" sign in front of that portion of my body. I can't really describe it except it felt like my body was saying "no!" This right away helped me recognize the chakras (there were 2) that need clearing and opening and the chakras that felt open and fine. I think it is a very positive tool in identifying where your body needs clearing and also to keep your chakras clear, open, and bright. I also found that when prompted by the CD, things or people in my life would come to my mind that I hadn't previously realized was a problem for me. I have to say that I am an intuitive person, open to metaphysical teachings, etc., but I am not heavily into this type of work. So for me, having done almost no previous chakra cleansing work, I was very happily surprised with what I got. I need to read the book next! I have other chakra books so I am familiar with locations on the body and what they represent.

Brad Matthews is the director of purchasing and storeroom operations at The Culinary Institute of America (CIA). Directing a storeroom staff of more than two dozen, Mr. Matthews is responsible for all purchases on the college's Hyde Park, NY campus, including more than $6.5 million of food products for the college each year. Mr. Matthews and his staff must assure the value of those purchases through proper receipt, evaluation, storage, and timeliness of deliveries. He also oversees the distribution to the 41 kitchens and bakeshops of all food coming into the CIA campus.

Paul Wigsten is the produce buyer at The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in Hyde Park, NY. Mr. Wigsten also owns and operates Wigsten Farm in Pleasant Valley, NY with his family. Excellent basic reference for produce

As a CIA student, I was issued this book as the text for our class on produce product knowledge. I thoroughly enjoyed it. You can tell the authors get real joy out of describing an item, when it's in season, how it should look and taste, etc...This book doesn't contain recipes, but occasionally one of the authors will mention a simple way to prepare an item that sounds delicious. Some of the more exotic or obscure items (to the US market) aren't in the book, but this is a very solid offering that covers 90+% of the produce the average person will eat.

Bringing Progress to Paradise is more than a travel memoir.  It is a how-to and a how-not-to manual for Himalayan trekking.  More significantly to me, it introduces readers to the strongest and kindest people I know.  God willing, it will inspire others to action, to live adventurously, but not just for self, but to transmit love and compassion across mountains, oceans, and cultures.

About the Author
Jeff Rasley is a writing coach, Himalayan trek organizer and president of the Basa Village Foundation USA Inc. He lives in Indiana, where he practiced law for 30 years. His avocation has been adventure travel since leaving school at 18 to hitch hike across the country. He has solo sea-kayaked around the islands of Palau three times and participated in kayaking expeditions in Tonga, the Greek Isles, French Polynesia and various Caribbean islands. Rasley has participated in, and led, mountaineering expeditions in Nepal and the Himalayas since 1995. A 360 Degree View of the Highs and Lows of Progress

This book is a thrilling arm chair adventure that is partly memoir, partly travelogue, partly a review of modern history in Nepal, and partly an expedition which served as a fund-raiser to build an addition on to a grammar school in a remote Rai mountain village in Nepal. The author lives in the prairie state of Indiana and described how he felt a kind of malaise when he was aged 43 that he labeled 'a midlife crisis. His wife dropped a brochure in front of him about a Himalayan mountain trekking expedition and essentially told him, "go climb a mountain." And as they say, "the rest is history" because the author turned this new adventure into a love affair with trekking, mountain climbing and the people of Nepal. He spent over 10 years visiting the Himalaya mountains and building up his stamina and physical abilities to climb mountains at the height of 20,000+ feet to experience the highs and lows associated with this kind of life experience, essentially he was hooked! The Himalaya mountains put a magical spell on the author, which most visitors who enter this part of the world seem to experience and describe as life-altering.

The author begins his book with an unexpected tragic event that he witnessed in 1999 when he was attempting to climb the Mera Peak a 21,224 feet high mountain. It took eleven days to reach the Mera base camp from where the group had views of surrealsitic mountain passes and glistening glaciers. A low distant roar was heard as an avalanche struck and buried three Nepalese porters. This event caused the author to wait four more years before he ventured into this alluring and challenging environment again. Besides his personal experience, Nepal was undergoing political changes with Maoist gangs inciting revolution and the health threat of SARS was spreading in Asia so it was not safe to visit Nepal. Jeff Rasley weaves the modern history of Nepal into his book and debates the effects of the virus of modern consumerism on the Nepalese people. He writes interesting facts about the current political climate and includes fascinating details about Sir Edmund Hillary's first recorded successful climb to the top of the highest mountain in the world Mount Everest in 1953 Another well written chapter covers the Golden Jubilee celebration of that historic event, fifty years later when the author again visited Nepal, this time he trekked through Sagarmatha National Park in the Khumba region, near Mount Everest. He met Sir Emund's older sister June and her daughter Hillary Carlyle. After becoming world famous and wealthy, Sir Edmund spent most of his life in philanthropic activities, such as school building, providing electricity and running water, and health clinics to the Sherpa people.

After spending over ten years trekking and mountain climbing in Nepal, the author felt compelled to 'give something back' to the people of Nepal. He chose to organize expeditions and make arrangements directly with Nepalese trekking and mountain climbing companies. Additionally, he organized fundraisers to provide direct help to remote Himalayan mountain villages, which included a village water project, sixty five pounds of school supplies, and providing funds to help build an addition onto a village school in the Rai village called Basa. This last project provided the most interesting reading in this book. The author describes the highs and lows of arranging a trekking experience with a group of five, some of whom were prepared for the challenges associated with the journey, some of whom were not. The reader is given a 360 degree perspective of breath-taking mountain vistas along with experiencing altitude sickeness and hypothermia. The joyous reception which awaited the group who succeeded in reaching the village of Basa is an unforgetable chapter. Overall, the author provides a realistic description of what it means to experience a culture vastly different from our own. Since the 21st century has arrived to the country of Nepal, life in the cities and villages is changing. The reader is taken on a fascinting journey to explore, compare and contrast, as well as debate how the meeting of the East and West has altered the landscape and lives of people in this remote part of the globe. Rasley's internal struggles about helping the people of the isolated mountain village of Basa, Nepal, become your own as you share his experiences and contemplate his interactions. The warmth, love and trust bestowed upon him by these remarkable people has sparked in him a transformation that will likely influence every aspect of his life.

Beautifully Written

Bringing Progress To Paradise by Jeff Rasley This book reminds me of Three Cups of Tea in that Rasley went to Nepal, saw the needs of the tiny village in the Himalayas, which had no running water and no electricity and badly needed teachers and a school, returned home and made it happen. Jeff is a lawyer and an action adventurer and the climb of Mt. Everest was a life-changing event for him. In wanting to help the people he found so wonderful, he was very cautious that the "help" might also bring with it the problems of Western civilization:greed, and trash, and waste, fighting, materialism, and the destruction of families working to help each other, which has always been the way of life and survival in the "top of the world" villages for centuries. Jeff, in beautiful writing style, shows the reader the place, the people, his experiences, and his yearning to help in a truly careful and best way. He returned in 2009 to supply these people with many of their needs and requests through funds he raised for several years. The book details beautifully "Waht I Got from Going to a Mountain Village in Nepal.
