This is a modsecurity book ONLY

The description seemed misleading. This book dedicates its entirety to apache modsecurity. Any and all of the defenses are with modsecurity.

So, 5 stars if you wanted a book on modsecurity. I obviously did not.

The defenses were basic and probably well written out, if you use modsecurity and need help understanding it. I personally have no use for this book and a complete waste of money.

Most of us would think 'web application' as our program we built as a web application. Apache is a webserver. I was hoping for a book that might have extra guidelines or thoughts on adding great things to your web apps to defend them.

This book does none of that for me.

So, if you are not looking for mod security info, do not waste money. Seller should add 'modsecurity' only and possibly renamed the book as 'Modsecurity used to defend web apps' or something.

buyer beware.

to top it off, this book is not 'new'...it has scratches all over the cover. If it is new then it was damaged from shipping...

EDIT: I have contacted wiley and a rep will be getting back to me about changing this description from 'great techniques AND some madsecurity code' to 'modsecurity techniques only'

Don't be misled by the small blurb about mod_security...this is all the book is, pure mod_Security.

Personally, if you want to use mod_Security I would highly recommend this book..but if you are looking for this as a companion to the hackers handbooks to beef up your web app security, then you will be completely disappointed and out 30 bucks.

Great security resource for web application developers

While far from scientific, a search of web application security vulnerabilities returns over 2,600,000 results. However you search for it, web applications need to be secured, and insecure web applications are a major problem.

In Web Application Defender's Cookbook: Battling Hackers and Protecting Users, author Ryan Barnett provides a highly technical resource for web application developers. All of the over 100 recipes are valuable tips on how to secure web applications.

In the forward to the book, Jeremiah Grossman of WhiteHat Security writes that a web defenders success comes down to understanding a few key points. One of those points is that defenders will find themselves responsible for protecting web suites they did not create and have little or no insight into or control over. That and Grossman's other observations highlight the imperative for organization to ensure that web application security is made an imperative.

Part of the challenge is that today's web sites are becoming more complex, with many interrelated connection, protocol and technologies. While many network infrastructures are a lot more secure; if web applications are not completely locked down, patched and secured, they are simply targets for attackers.

And the challenge is that even if a network is secured, it will still likely allow web traffic to pass through, given that http is perceived as friendly. And given that there is a lot that a firewall can't do; web application defense is a must-have item.
The reality is that securing web sites is difficult. But for those that want to ensure their web sites are as secure as possible, their developers should certainly implement the delicious recipes in Web Application Defender's Cookbook: Battling Hackers and Protecting Users.

Very good

It focuses a great deal on Mod Security for Apache; in some ways I wish it could be a bit more diversified.

I found the first part about measuring security to be very useful. It is beneficial to move beyond shock and awe when reporting about security to management. This book provides a way for real numbers that represent the validity of your security efforts.

My First Shelby Cross Read - And Certainly Not My Last

This was definitely an interesting retelling of Grimm's King Thrushbeard. I've had several people recommend Shelby Cross's books to me before, so when I saw this new release, I just had to grab it.

The beginning was a bit confusing - just with all the names and the set up. Once I moved beyond those first few chapters, everything was much smoother and easier to focus on the story being told.

The historical aspect was a really nice refresher to all the contemp I've been reading lately - it reminded me why I love a good historical :) Plus, ya.... Noth and Merewyn steam up the pages quite a bit.

I enjoyed Cross's retelling of King Thrushbeard. I really enjoyed the dynamics between Merewyn and the other characters. I definitely want to check out more by her in the future.

Highly recommended

In honor of Proposition 8 going before the Supreme Court, I decided to dedicate the month of April to reading LGBT books. This one was the first that I stumbled upon. I read other reviews on the book, as I usually do, before diving into this one. Some complain about the violence in the book. Initially, I had the same reaction. However, if you read it closely, the author is teaching a vital lesson here. Domestic violence within the LGBT commmunity is real and often overlooked. Those in such relationships should not feel that since they are same-sex that it is an equal playing field and that it wasn't that serious. That's what I took from that. Also, I loved the fact that the title could not have been better chosen. This book is actually a collection of stories. Each story is that of a different woman. Every single lesbian relationship/encounter/perspective/desires that you can think of is in this book. I'm an avid believer that we are weak as a people because of all our self-division. This book nails this as well. A few characters question the point of labels (stud, femme, tranny, etc.); I loved that it went that deep. Furthermore, I love how this book reads. It reads like a diary. Each story sounds so real. All of the lesbian-oriented books that I've ever read (excluding Anais Nin), are allll erotic. I know that is not all that being a lesbian consists of and I'm grateful that a contemporary author has finally captured the reality of such romances. Again, I enjoyed it and recommend it to all--even if simply for a deeper understanding into this lifestyle.

Loved this book

I read this book with one intention, to understand a culture that was different from my own. I have many lesbian friends and I wanted to have a deeper understanding of them, and their relationships. What I found in this book was beautiful. Every story was different. Every story helped me to look at the world differently. I felt the characters pains. I felt their struggles. I felt the love and passion that they had for their relationships. I thank the author for giving the world an inside look into a culture that many are curious about but are scared to look at and understand. Great job. I would definitely read more books from this author.

SO I DOWNLOADED THIS BOOK RIGHT BEFORE WE LEFT ON DEPLOYMENT AND WE'VE BEEN OUT HERE FOR ONLY 3 WEEKS AND I FINISHED THIS BOOK IN 3 DAYS!!! I WAS FEENING FOR MORE BUT WE HAD TO WAIT AWHILE TO GET INTERNET... THAT WAS THE LONGEST WAIT EVER! THIS BOOK WAS AWESOME AND NOW I'M ORDERING THE REST PAPER BOOK OFOURSE SINCE WE HAVE NO WIFI! Not mentioned the well-researched writings, the illustrations, presented in big size, printed with high quality, definitely are the merits for this coffee-table sized book to serve as a pictorial reference for art of the Renaissance, especially, for the sculpture part. This high-quality volume is a bargain. It should be one of the collection on your book shelf if you find interest in classic works of art.

We just got back from a trip to Florence and Rome - I wanted a book of the great art and architecture we saw while we were visiting. This book was perfect. The pictures are beautiful. I also bought Michaelangelo: the comlete sculpture, painting, architecture. Completely happy with these selections.

The author divides the material in 14 parts: Antiquity, The Middle Ages, The golden age of Spain, Italian Renaissance, Tudor and Stewart periods, The age of Louis XIV, The restoration theater, Venetian comedy, Eighteenth century England, Weimar Classicism, Nineteenth Century England, The American Theater, European naturalism.- For each period, the author has collected more than 300 primary texts, through which we feel that the past is still next to us. The spectator's manners, the way of acting, the conditions of rehearsals, the reactions of the audience, all of them come to us through real documents. More than 80 pictures in black-and-white complete this very good edition. (The pictures are, unfortunately, not very well printed.) I really suggest this editon.

What was theatre really like?

So...what was Euripides like during rehearsal? Kind of cranky, it appears. What did they do for special effects in the 17th century? Quite a lot, actually: floating gods and goddesses, strange animals, they had it all. First-hand accounts will show you all this and more in a fascinating book for theatre lovers. I had read this during a college course years ago, and was delighted that it's still in print. A good read and reference for those interested in theatre, literature, and history, only slightly marred by occasionally poor quality illustrations.

"Alter-Politics" is concerned with the way anthropological critical writing in particular aims to weave oppositional concerns (anti-politics) with a search for alternatives (alter-politics): alternative economies, alternative modes of inhabiting and relating to the earth, alternative modes of thinking and experiencing otherness. The book argues that it is because radical political passion has been mostly directed towards anti-politics that it has come to dominate over alter-politics. This does not simply mean that political passion needs to be equally directed towards alter-politics. It also means that this passion itself needs to be a radically different kind of political passion once so directed. It is this alter-political passion that Ghassan Hage strives to create a space for throughout "Alter-Politics."

About the Author
Ghassan Hage is a professor of anthropology and social theory at the University of Melbourne. He has held many international visiting professorships, including at Harvard, at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris, the University of Copenhagen, and the American University of Beirut. He is the author of numerous publications, including "White Nation: Fantasies of White Supremacy in a Multicultural Society."
