About the Author

Jorge Acevedo is the Lead Pastor at Grace Church, a multi-site United Methodist congregation in Southwest Florida. Jorge led a group of young clergy in the creation of the book and Bible study Sent: Delivering the Gift of Hope at Christmas and is author of Vital: Churches Changing Communities and the World. He is a contributor to Circuit Rider magazine, Good News magazine, and Our Faith Today.

Lanecia Rouse is the author of numerous articles on Christian formation for Upper Room Ministries and Abingdon Press. She has held pastoral roles in the United Methodist and British Methodist Church, most recently as Project Manager of the Art Project, Houston, a therapeutic art ministry with those experiencing homelessness. Lanecia earned a Master of Divinity degree from Duke Divinity School and currently lives in Houston, where she continues her ministry as a writer, artist, photographer, and workshop leader.

Rachel Billups serves as the Executive Pastor of Discipleship and as part of the preaching team for Ginghamsburg Church in Tipp City, Ohio. Rachel is an Ordained Elder within the United Methodist Church and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Bible/Religion and History from Anderson University and a Master of Divinity degree from Duke Divinity School. Before joining the Ginghamsburg team, Rachel served as the lead pastor of Shiloh United Methodist, a multi-site church in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Jacob Armstrong is the founding pastor of Providence Church, a five-year-old United Methodist church plant in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, reaching 1,000 people each week. Providence’s vision is to see those who are disconnected from God and the church to find hope, healing, and wholeness in Jesus Christ. Jacob is the author of Treasure, The God Story, Upside Down, Loving Large, Interruptions, and The New Adapters.

Justin LaRosa is a licensed clinical social worker and Deacon who leads the new ministry of Hyde Park United Methodist Church in downtown Tampa, Florida. He served for eight years as the Minister of Discipleship, working with a team of leaders to facilitate the process of organizing, training, empowering, and supporting laypersons. Justin is co-author with James A. Harnish of A Disciple's Path and A Disciple's Heart.

About the Author
Carsen Taite is an avid reader and writer of lesbian fiction. Carsen works by day (and sometimes night) as a criminal defense attorney in Dallas, Texas. Though her day job is often stranger than fiction, she can’t seem to get enough and spends much of her free time devouring novels, lesbian fiction in particular.

Carsen is an active member of the GLBT community, participating in several organizations on both the local and state levels. Carsen is married (Canadian-style) and she and her spouse live near White Rock Lake in Dallas where they enjoy cycling and walking the trails with their fuzzy beasts.

Beyond Boring

Technically, nothing is wrong with the writing here. Taite writes well and creates a convincing setting when it comes to lawyers and their professional jargon. My problem with this book is that we mostly drown in what the author knows best (professional setting) and don't get enough plot and romance. This story seemed to move along in real-time and when I got to page 100 in this 231 page book, I realized nothing really happened. The leads barely meet and very little on this central case happens. I didn't really care about any of these characters. I found myself skimming most of this book.

What we get here is one pretty brown-haired and green-eyed Texan prosecutor (Cory Lance) who is suspended for dishonest stuff and she ends up volunteering for the other side to help clean up her rep and keep her job. In doing so, she is assigned to Eric Washington's case... an African-American on death row who claims he is innocent. When his estranged sister from Florida shows up to support him any way she can, she ends up working closely with Cory. However, Cory does have a long-term lover.

Serena Washington is an attractive mocha-skinned African-American who was separated from her brother Eric when she's a young girl. Her father is gone and her mother was a junkie and they both end up in foster homes. Serena is quickly adopted by a nice (white?) family and grows up right. Eric isn't and has a troubled life. Despite a little bit of background we get on these siblings, the story really isn't about their relationship. I couldn't really figure out what the author wanted me to care about for the first chunk of the book. Also, Serena's feelings about women and relationships is murky.

When the romance finally shows up, it's a bland one and not given much focus. Nothing sexy to save it either. The one bedroom scene is a fleeting, non-graphic blurb, and by the time it arrived, I really just wanted the book to end already. Honestly, the picture of Carsen Taite on the back of the book with tape over her mouth was the sexiest imagery I got from this book and I found myself turning the book over all through my read and smirking... love a hot nerd in bondage, lol. As for the characters within, I wasn't really feeling any chemistry here, and I didn't get how Serena could stick around so long. I mean, I don't understand how Serena was helping out with this case. She is praised for it, but I didn't get it.

I am not really into books where the romance isn't clearly at the forefront, despite a whole other plot. I might feel differently if the plots were actually interesting and original in lesfic, but mostly they aren't. I come here to escape in a sexy romance, and I kinda feel sorry for writers who think any other part of the story can possibly be more interesting. This is the second book I've read by this author, and I kinda felt that way about the first as well, but it wasn't as dull (just half as dull). If you like a book that is focused outside of the romance and sounds realistic but mostly goes nowhere, then you may like this one more than I did. But I saw it all as pretty boring.

And I gotta say... there musta been a diversity meeting at Bold Strokes Books because after years of seldom seeing minority leads, this is suddenly the third BSB author among my random picks whose book was released last fall and has an ethnic lead. Amazing. Or just coincidence? lol. Either way, I applaud the effort... but can't resist pointing out that this lead is Black whose mom is a junkie and her brother's in prison... Melissa Brayden's lead is a Mexican "cleaning lady," and Rachel Spangler couldn't even think up a stereotype and simply regurgitated the adolescent trip she took abroad with her high school Spanish class. C'mon people... where's the originality in characterization???!!???

A rare miss for mister wright

I usually love Eric Wright's mystery books but not this one. The main character is both a liar and is bigoted against women-very hard to like him. If I don't like the main character it is very hard for me to like the book. I did not like this one. But do try some of his other mysteries as they are usually very good.

Ontario Provincial Police Sergeant Willie is stunned when a woman reports a murder at a cabin on Larch River. Wilkie believes his father's old law enforcement peer, retired cop Mel Pickett, is the victim as this is his home. However, when Wilkie arrives at the scene, he finds a different corpse. The witness, Elisa Pullock, explains that the deceased is Norbert Thompson, renting the cabin from the recently married Mel. Elisa is borrowing a nearby trailer from Mel to work on a historical book about the area.

Upon hearing the news of the homicide of his border, the sixty-six-year-old Mel, as well as his wife Charlotte, is stunned. While the cops wonder if this might be part of the recent break-ins that turned ugly, Mel wonders if he was the target. Also under consideration by the law remains the fact that that Norbert left his brother's home to live at this cabin after a major spat with his sibling. Not wanting to wait, Mel goes into his police mode seeking the identity of a killer.

DEATH OF A HIRED MAN is a fabulous police procedural with private investigative elements. The story line is well crafted because author Eric Wright makes his cast seem genuine without slowing down the tale. Fans of a good crime novel starring newly married senior citizens struggling with difficult decisions such as wills and multiple homes will find this book as a sure thing.

"Death of a Hired Man" is a good mystery. Not outstanding, but certainly quite enjoyable.
The body of Norbert Thompson was found in the log cabin of retired officer Mel Pickett. Not only was the small community shaken by the murder, but naturally Pickett found himself involved -- especially when he realized who the murderer might be.
The more I read, the more I liked Norbert -- who never appears in the book ALIVE.
Between the purity of the writing, the decent characters, and the intriguing sub plot involving Pickett's son, I'm interested in reading the sequel (if one is written) as well as the other series by Eric Wright. The author caught my attention, kept it throughout the book, and left me wanting a little more. I believe that that means that "Death of a Hired Man" is a success.

I wanted to like it.

The author seems like a nice person. The writing is choppy and hard to follow at times. It seems to be trying to create suspense where suspense is not really needed. I'm sorry to say, but I gave up on it after a few chapters.

Disappointed

She seemed to encourage people to ditch their commitments to the partners they had, in preference for people thought might be their Twin Flame. I have been lucky enough to meet my twin flame, but I honor my previous commitment to my husband and children. This is part of my divine plan and I am honored to fulfill it. My twin is also unavailable, and unaware of our connection as well. That doesn't minimize the truth of our connection. I'm just fortunate enough to be able to have some kind of relationship with him until such time when I can share with him this truth, or when we are both in finished with this human life. It seemed to me that a lot of her case studies were about people who sounded like they were probably not twin souls, but strong karmic or soul mate connections. She doesn't convey the importance of honoring your karmic commitments. I'm sure some marriages might end anyway, and that's okay, but it should not be for the reasons of being with your twin flame.

I think everyone should read this

As a psychic empath I am so pleased this book so succinctly states what I try to explain to clients about soul mates, karmic partners and twin flames. As a woman it confirms what in have personally felt a divine relationship is. I think the reader should use their own free will to see what resonates with him/her. Over all, it is an excellent read. Especially the explanation on why there is a trend of so called "sacred tantra" workshops and how it is an exploitation of people's need for self love and spiritual awareness.

About the Author
Michael S. Wolf was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1948. He attended Webb School (Bell Buckle, Tennessee), Stanford University, and Louisiana State University Law School. He has practiced law in Louisiana and other American jurisdictions since 1973. His earliest spiritual training consisted of Catholicism, eventually supplemented by the Christian Yoga of J.-M. Dechanet, the Joyous Cosmology of Alan Watts, and the Fourth Way of G. I. Gurdjieff. Since the early 1970s Wolf has been a student of buddhadharma, drawing his main influences from the Karma Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and from the Soto Zen tradition of Japanese and Chinese Buddhism. His main dharma teacher is Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche, abbot of Karma Triyana Dharmachakra Monastery, located in Woodstock, New York. Wolf resides in Baton Rouge with his wife, Lessie Johnson. They have a grown daughter, and they are trying to age gracefully as Wolf pursues literary and legal projects and carries on a long-running campaign for civic and ideological reform.
