Excellent Overall, Though Troublesome In Places

Rigas Doganis is a brilliant man, and I regard him very highly as an authority on the modern airline industry. This book was originally published in early 2001, and by virtue of predating the terrorist attacks of 9/11 some of the information presented here is a bit outdated. Of course nobody could have accurately predicted the effects of the 9/11 attacks, but there are several other inaccurate predictions in the book as well, most especially the forward looking prediction of fuel prices. There are also several simply incorrect statements presented as fact here. For instance on page 132, Doganis asserts that the key reason that Southwest Airlines is so successful is due to its "low cost, non-union labor." Actually Southwest has some of the highest paid workers in the industry (they are, however, more productive, on average, than those at legacy airlines) and virtually all groups at Southwest are unionized. What is true is that many other low cost carriers do in fact have poorly compensated non-union workers. He also (page 133) alleges that Southwest has three Flight Attendants on a 737-300, whereas most airlines use either five or six. I know of no airline that routinely staffs a 737-300 with that many Flight Attendants (the airplane doesn't even have than many Flight Attendant jumpseats), certainly not in the US.

Doganis comes out in favor of cabotage and total deregulation of the worldwide industry, which US carriers view as predatory inasmuch as the US domestic market is still the single largest aviation market in the world. The problem with his view is that the US government has for several decades now depended on CRAF (Civil Reserve Air Fleet) aircraft for the majority of its airlift in wartime as a budget cutting measure. By using CRAF for airlift, the USAF needs vastly fewer transport aircraft, saving the government billions of dollars annually. The issue to recognize (which Doganis doesn't even touch on) is that if major airlines come under foreign control, those CRAF aircraft can't be counted on to support the US military. Imagine if French interests controlled one or more major airlines during the latest Iraqi campaign. This is obviously a thorny area that can't be simplistically reduced to the level of analysis that Doganis has reduced it to.

Doganis has both good and bad moments in this book. In Chapter Five, his obvious pro-management bent (he is a former CEO of Olympic Airways of Greece) blames virtually all monetary problems on the cost of labor while sometimes discounting bad managerial decisions, although to his credit, in other parts of the book he does discuss the pitfalls of bad management. The book is illustrated with many charts, some of which are quite good, but many of which are irrelevant at best and confusing at worst. The section on e-commerce predates the development of Orbitz and is generally out of date, although many of his predictions have thus far been proven correct. In the plus column, he writes brilliantly on the effects of seat commoditization, and (page 174) brilliantly unmasks the whole Priceline.com issue for what it really is.

This book is a weighty and ponderous read, but I do recommend it to airline and management professionals, particularly those with background in the economics of commercial aviation. This book has its faults, but reading it is still time very well spent.

Out-of-Date

This is a well written book that is easy to follow and understand by a well known author on the aviation industry. The book describes the topical issues of the airline industry including the ongoing liberalisation and globalization of the industry, the impact of the low-cost carriers on the airline industry in the new millennium, online distribution of airline services, among other things, with a focus on the future of the industry.

The main weakness of the book is that it was written before the events of 9/11 in the USA and the other major shocks and crisis that confronted the aviation industry including the threat of terrorism, the SARS epidemic, the Iraq War and these and other shocks have made of the predictions by Doganis to be very out-of-date. This book is, therefore, superseded by "The Airline Business" written by the same author, which is the book that I recommend rather this one.

Lover's Knot, another wonderful resource by Eleanor Burns

I love the books Eleanor Burns puts together. My first quilting class was her Quilt In A Day Log Cabin Quilt. She makes the process easy, fun and understandable. This book looks very similar. I took a look through it and I understand now more quickly because of her technique of stripping and keeping it more easily learned and done. Pravo Eleanor Burns and company!!

Great Book

I love this book, This is my second copy, the first having been eaten by the dog(he loved the book too). The pattern is easy to follow and quick to make. There are so many color combinations you can choose. I have other quilt books as well and while some are easy most only give one size quilt to make and if you want to make a different size you must calculate it out on your own or use trial and error. This Book gives you all the sizes with yardage and binding ideas. While I like the angled corners making a square cornered quilt is also included. This is a great buy and well worth it.

Internationally recognized as a Bible scholar and spiritual patriarch, Derek Prince (1915–2003) was educated as a scholar of classical languages at Eton College and Cambridge University in England, and later at Hebrew University in Israel. While serving with the British army in World War II, he began to study the Bible as a philosophical work and, as a result, experienced a life–changing encounter with Jesus Christ. Derek Prince taught and ministered on six continents for more than sixty years, imparting God's revealed truth, praying for the sick and afflicted, and sharing his prophetic insights into world events in the light of Scripture. He wrote over fifty books, which have been translated in over sixty languages and distributed worldwide. He pioneered teaching on such groundbreaking themes as generational curses, the biblical significance of Israel, and demonology. About the Author

Dr. Makely manages administrative projects and the Employee Education and Development department for Clarian Health Partners in Indianapolis, one of the nation’s preeminent health care organizations employing 12,000 people. She's a Radiologic Technologist with a Master’s degree in Education and a Ph.D. in Human Resources. Dr. Makely has developed and directed allied health education programs, career advancement initiatives, and workforce education and development projects for more than thirty five years.

Dr. Makely is a consultant, speaker, author, and researcher. As President and CEO of Pine Ridge Publications, Inc. she has authored and published several books on health careers, cross-training, teamwork, and professionalism for Pine Ridge Publications, Prentice Hall, and other publishing companies. Dr. Makely authored the first two editions of Prentice Hall's health care professionalism texts as well as the new, third edition scheduled for publication in January, 2008.

Dr. Makely served on the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), the Advisory Panel of the National Multiskilled Health Practitioner Clearinghouse, the Pew Health Professions Commission’s Allied Health Advisory Panel, the National Health Care Skill Standards Review Committee, and the Indiana Chamber's Employer Advisory Council. She has directed several grant-funded programs including a federal demonstration site for the US Department of Labor and Workplace Skills programs for the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. In 1991, Dr. Makely was honored as the Baxter Fellow for Innovation in Health Management by the American Hospital Association's Research and Educational Trust and the Baxter Foundation.

Professionalism in Health Care

I think the book is okay but too expensive for the size and the information it has. I already had a professionalism class that was basically the same thing, just not a medical version.I found Therapeutic Communications to be a better book.

Book needs a professional makeover

One teeth-grinding feature of this book is Ms. Makely's constant habit of putting quotes around phrases (e.g., "prove yourself", "free labor", "press your buttons") -- phrases that don't need quotes. Someone needs to tell her that this has the effect in readers' minds of casting doubt on whatever is being said -- it's as though she's saying, "I don't believe what I'm writing" or maybe "I think what I am writing here is beneath me, but I'll write it anyway."

Another (and probably worse) is the tendency to lecture as though her audience is a bunch of PINS (persons in need of supervision), especially the places where she lobs rhetorical question after rhetorical question, implying the reader is no doubt the laziest, sloppiest person imaginable. These harangues are insulting and disrespectful.

Finally, the CD is out of date -- it claims to work on a Macintosh, but it sure doesn't on mine.

Good book, HORRIBLE CD-ROM

I needed this book for a class. The book was fine but the CD that came with it was terrible. It didn't save or print my work. It kept freezing and an error message kept popping up. Once the error message popped up it would kick me out and every time I tried to get back on it it would keep kicking me out. Some other students in my class was having the same problem.
