A Different View

The mid 1600’s were not a particularly good time to be in England. There were the civil wars, and various other wars between Catholics and Protestants (among others). A lot of the royal family, kings and wives were executed. The great fire of London took place. Dr. Greenberg has analyzed this time not from a historical point of view, but from an analysis of plays, other writings and paintings from and about the time. She analyzes works of Shakespeare, Milton, Massinger and many other writers to illustrate how the literature changed to match changes at the base level of society. There were arguments about the divine power of kings culminating in the execution of Charles I. Cromwell was attempting to change the very structure of English government.

Dr. Greenberg includes eleven illustrations from paintings of the period. Unfortunately including the paintings in black and white in a regular 6"x9" book means that they are reduced in size to make them difficult to see the critical points she is discussing. To better see what she is discussing I went to the web to find better images.

All in all, this book presents an original view of life at the time.

Arctic adventure

It was a very good book. I suggest you at least give this book
A try. If you love puppies or dogs like I do then you'll definitely love this book. It takes you on an adventure where Ella finds a dog in a cardboard box and begs her mum and dad to keep it but she waits for them to make up their minds and her dog blue takes Ella to the arctic to the startlight snowdogs team where the dogs including blue can speak like humans! ..... I'm not saying more I'm letting you buy this book so you can read on and find out what happens:) there is also a book 1 of this that I read first called Land Of Snow check it out!!! :)

Loved it

I have bought many books from amazon but this is the first time I felt compelled to submit a review of a book. Outnumbered is a quick read and it gives a refreshing, unique perspective from an individual who stands so boldly and courageously in what she believes in. As a grad student surrounded by a group of "tolerant scholars", I was inspired and encouraged by Jedediah's responses and reactions to these encounters. I highly recommend this book, no matter what your political affiliation is.

I have to applaud Jedediah Bila for standing up for her beliefs, even in the face of what is a seemingly overwhelming opponent (I use that term somewhat loosely as we are all Americans). I have watched her on FNC for about a year now, I would guess and I always enjoy her opinions, whatever the topic and I admire her for not taking an abrasively adversarial stance, instead being forceful but respectful. I like that.

This book is not so much a platform for her sociopolitical beliefs but rather an experience of the time leading up to the 2008 election and after Obama was sworn in to the Office of President, ending in March of that year, with a brief update in our current year. It is filled with episodes of how people she encountered through the day reacted to her Palin pin, or how she doesn't look like a conservative or how her 'friends' reacted to her coming out as a conservative. I found those very revealing and, sometimes, very sad.

It is basically a diary and it is interesting how often during that time politics played a huge role in our lives. Miss Bila relays that in a casual, effective way, sometimes funny (the restribution of muscle tone was hilarious!), always interesting in her daily adventures, but I was really quite shocked at how many teachers used their positions to persuade their students to think along a very specific political line, mostly Democrat. I am glad my teachers did not do that. Miss Bila clearly wants school to be a process where the kids learn how to make up their own minds about the issues and not just be told what to say and what to think, ala Orwell's 1984. Though she is no longer teaching, she does give me hope for the future teachers in America.

If I have any complaint, and why I took off half a star, it is because the book is too short. I wanted to read more. When I was finished, I felt somewhat disappointed that it had ended already. I guess that is a criticism but also a compliment, in a way.

A Pea In A Huge Pod: She has to be weird

I loved the book. And at the same time think "This lady is weird." Weird in the sense that she has to be if she remains in such a hostile place to anything conservative. And she definitely is conservative. Weird in that she lives among so many "progressives" that call on everyone to be tolerant - except they are not, unless you agree with their socialistic world view . Miss Bila is a great writer and very witty. This short book reflects that...my only complaint.....I wanted to read more. I highly recommend it....what are you waiting for....get it!

I have enjoyed this book for several years. I was fortunate to have taken a Business History class with Dr. Wren. The book is a well written, easy to understand and follows a logic pattern. I also use it as a reference for other business class. This book is a keeper.

About the Author
From Ferrari in the early days, through Alfa Romeo, Lotus, McLaren & Porsche, Tony has had an intense interest in engineering quality and inspired design. He has been the 911 3.2 Register Secretary for the Porsche Club Great Britain for some years and has been working on this exacting Carrera book for some considerable time. Tony lives on the isle of Man and, amongst other interests, including writing, photography and designing houses, collects classic and sports cars. Currently he has three Porsche icons in his collection.

one of the best books on one of the best Porsche's

Anyone who knows Porsche 911's knows the 3.2 Carrera is one of the best 911's ever made. The classic 911 lines started getting "soft" after the 1987/88 model years, and of course, a few years later, the classic air-cooled engine, which some refer to as "bullet-proof", was gone. It was a thrill to find a book that specifically covered the 3.2 Carrera, and a bigger thrill to discover the author did a great job of it too. The pictures are excellent, as is the lay-out and text. As the 3.2 Carrera becomes more of a classic, I'm sure this book will too.

Very In-depth look at 1984-1989 year model

This book provides you much more information than you can get from The 911 Red Book or The Used 911 Story by Peter Zimmerman (I owned both). Those are the two must have. Furthermore, Tony Corlett gives you a lot of personal opinion, like driving impression and feel. This is more than just dry numbers on specification and performance measurement. All the variation within the 3.2 Carrera model line are being covered. High quality nice pictures. The most important chapter is on the Turbo-Look M491 option. It dispells a lot of mis-information I got from internet forums.

A very nice book with good data and photos - however strictly of British nature i.e. measurements, terminology, even colours are given with the British colour names only. Still worth having if you are a 911 owner or fan.

John Gerlach earned a B.S. Degree in Wildlife Ecology from Central Michigan University in 1977. He has earned his living as a professional nature photographer since 1980. He is a versatile photographer who is equally at home making landscape images of Death Valley, photographing hummingbirds with high speed flash, or making moody images of dewy dragonflies and butterflies. Rather than photographing subjects that might sell well in the marketplace, he prefers to pursue subjects that interest him the most. He often photographs subjects that are not well known such as the Black Rosy-Finch which appeared on the front cover of the October 2000 issue of BIRDING. His photographs have been published in every major national magazine that uses nature photographs including NATIONAL WILDLIFE, SIERRA, NATURAL HISTORY, PETERSEN'S PHOTOGRAPHIC, RANGER RICK, BIRDER'S WORLD, MICHIGAN NATURAL RESOURCES, and AUDUBON. Perfect

For those who want to learn the basics of landscape photography, this is the perfect book.

The authors have not just assembled all the information necessary for a new digital photographer to produce good landscape photography. The authors present it clearly, simply and lucidly so the readers will have no difficulty understanding the lessons. Moreover, they have organized the information on each topic so that even if the reader has missed a point earlier in the book, he will be reminded again further on.

The ten chapters in the book cover necessary equipment, exposure, sharp focusing, the effect of light, and composition. There is a chapter on special subjects that covers techniques that range from photographing from a kayak to making images of fall foliage. There are even two chapters on the newest darlings of the landscape set, high dynamic range photography (HDR) and panoramas. The book is nicely illustrated with the authors' photographs.

The chapter on exposure is typical of the book. After explaining the factors of aperture, shutter speed and media sensitivity, the authors show how their interrelationship leads to a good exposure. The authors then show how to use the tools of the digital camera, like the histogram and the "blinkies" to get the exposure the photographer wants. Once having laid out these techniques, the Gerlachs reemphasize them throughout the book so that the new landscape photographer grasps the many factors that lead to a good photograph.

The chapters on HDR and panoramas, which are items that serious landscape photographers will eventually want to try, are not comprehensive descriptions of how to use these tools but rather tell just enough so that the reader can realize their potential and not be intimidated by their apparently complex procedures.

I suppose I could disagree with a few of their recommendations, like the details on the use of back-button focusing for landscapes, but the authors are clear in indicating that these are matters of preference, and indicate other methods of accomplishing the same tasks. On the other hand, they did inspire me to reconsider some techniques that I have generally not employed.

The book has little about post processing, except with regard to HDR and panoramas, and this helps to keep the book simple. Photographers who hope to master landscape photography will have to learn these skills as well. I've talked about new landscape photographers, and I expect that advanced landscape photographers are not likely to find techniques they did not know. On the other hand, there are plenty of photographers who have tried their hand at scenery images, and who have been less then successful. For these folks, this is an ideal book.

A Classic

This book sets the standard for digital landscape photography. The serious reader will learn three fundamental concepts that will vastly improve his or her images. The first is the use of the RGB histogram, requiring the photographer to move the color channel that is farthest to the right without clipping. This technique produces perfectly exposed highlights and avoids potentially serious problems caused by working with the camera's large luminous histogram.

The second technique is back-button focusing, a term coined by the Gerlachs and a technique which they have used for years. This technique enables the photographer working on a tripod to focus on an important subject in the frame, recompose the image, and take the shot without losing the original focus. This technique will be of enormous benefit for obtaining sharp focus on the critical element in the frame.

The third technique is using manual exposure, which avoids, among other things, the problem caused by light coming through the viewfinder and thereby altering the camera's meter and causing underexposure. Manual exposure is a foolproof method for avoiding this problem and is to be preferred to autoexposure in most circumstances.

There is a great deal more in the book than the three techniques mentioned above, and the book is rich in additional information for the digital landscape photographer. However, I believe that adopting these three techniques alone will produce an enormous improvement in one's landscape photography. The Gerlachs are to be congratulated for producing such an important book that I believe will become a classic in photography.

wonderful book - cheap print

The book is wonderful, the two authors spend most of their time discussing how to take excellent images in the field, rather than wasting too much time on hardware (one chapter) or digital post-processing (two chapters dealing with HDR and panoramas).
The rest deals with exposure, how to obtain sharp images, light conditions, composition etc. I like the author's style, stating their preferences where they think they matter and discussing the options where the personal needs or preferences of the individual photographer have to be considered. The book is illustrated with many superb images throughout.
What is not superb, however, is the overall print quality. On many pages the text is either faded or has a bluish tinge, making reading in low light difficult. That detracts from an otherwise excellent book.

Still an excellent purchase - one of my favorite books right now.
