About the Author
Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, OFM Cap, was born in Italy and ordained a Franciscan Capuchin priest in 1958. He taught at the Catholic University of Milan until 1979, when he resigned his teaching position to become a full-time preacher of the gospel. In 1980, he was appointed by Pope John Paul II as preacher to the papal household and still serves in that capacity. He is a frequent speaker at international and ecumenical conferences and rallies, and his books have been translated into more than twenty languages.

Perfect for this Year of Mercy

It is amazing how one person, Pope Francis, has been able to change what the focus of our lives must be in such a short amount of time. Thank God that Father Cantalamessa is still preaching to the Papal Household. He has given us very deep and meaningful insights on so any aspects of Our Lord and Christian living. This might just be his best.

For me I enjoyed reading a section and then rereading it

Each chapter is written in such a way that you can take your time reading and soaking in the message. It is simply written, but has a deep message. For me I enjoyed reading a section and then rereading it. When I purchase it I also purchased a copy for a friend. He commented that he was enjoyed the book greatly and was trying to put it into practice. Although I have read the Bible passages that Fr Cantalamessa talks on, he has given me a new twist to look at.
I think it would be great for a book study group.

About the Author
Veteran outdoor author William Forgey, M.D. is engaged in the full-time practice of family medicine and is a member of the board of trustees of the International Association for Medical Assistance to Travelers, a fellow of the Explorers Club, and a past president of the Wilderness Medical Society. A former Boy Scout scoutmaster and Medical Explorer Post and High Adventure Post advisor, he currently serves on the National Health and Safety Committee and as an advisory board member for the Northern Tier High Adventure Base for the Boy Scouts of America. He is the author of many wilderness medicine and camping books, including Basic Illustrated Wilderness First Aid (FalconGuides).

If you own no other book on this issue, get this one...

I am one of those "crazy preppers" and an instructor in the field with military, survival and some medical experience. I needed/wanted a good, basic medical "How To" book for inclusion in my "Go Bag", which could also be recommended to others. This is the one. It covers a surprising number of problems, illnesses, and injuries in clear, concise, and lucid fashion, easily comprehensible by the lay person without any medical training and it is wonderfully free of jargon. More importantly, the topics are easily accessible (no fumbling through an extended index trying to find the right entry while your buddy bleeds to death). Of huge importance to the average person is the fact that Dr. Forgey goes out of his way to demystify this stuff - For instance, you do not have to spend hours (as I have) practicing suturing and "surgeons' knots" on raw (skin on) chicken breasts. The author, instead, shows you how to sew up a wound in a few paragraphs and with a handful of clear illustrations and then helpfully notes, after showing you the best knots to use, that, when you tie off, "any knot will do". For the first timer whose hands are shaking and who is about to throw up because of all the blood, that is a d**n good thing to know, because it takes the pressure off. Just sew it and tie it. This is not about making a pretty scar, it's about keeping you alive under exigent circumstances with minimal skills and minimal equipment, which is what you are going to need if and when the SHTF.

In a book this size (and it's small enough to pack), there are going to be some omissions and this book has them, but they are surprisingly few and what it does have more than compensates for the occasional oversight. Blessedly, there is a minimal amount of verbage wasted on basic stuff, like washing your hands and boiling your water and not relieving yourself in your water source. This book presumes you are not a complete idiot and, instead, largely confines itself to providing a good "hands on" instruction on how to deal with specific medical problems which can arise while you're fleeing the chaos. It does contain some information on what all to keep in your medical kit, though it is weak on providing acquisition options and sources. It is also somewhat weak on the issue of medication effects and usage, however, before you stick a copy of the "Merck Manual" or the "PDR" in your back pack, you might want to check out the (green tabbed) medication section in Hesperian's "Where There is No Doctor", which is the best "field guide" to that particular topic I've encountered (note that you can download that section from the Hesperian website). See my review of that book.

Bottomline, unless you have an "M.D." behind your name, don't go into the woods without this book in your pack.

Love it, heck I wrote it

Of course I loved this book. But I admit that I wrote it for the isolated expedition that is self-contained or th survivalist stuck on his or her own - it does indicate when someone shoulld be evacuated, but further describes long-term management when that is not possible. This s the 6th edition, with the first written in 1979

Available Again!

I have been hoping for the longest time that this book would become available again! This paperback version is larger than the hardcover one, but I don’t mind that. I actually appreciate the bigger font size (it does make it easier to read). The front cover is so neat and included inside are some beautiful pictures of old holy cards that really add to the book. Overall, I am very pleased with this reprinted version and am happy not to have to pay an exorbitant amount for it!
As for the content of The Prisoner of Love itself, it is most excellent in every way! If ever I find my fervor growing cold, reading this book definitely helps to increase my love for Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. And I truly feel that this is one of the books that need to be read during these dark and dangerous times that we are living in. It is assisting at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and visiting Our Lord that is the answer to the many problems that we face… Highly recommended! :)

About the Author
 

Henry R. Cheeseman is professor emeritus of the Marshall School of Business of the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, California.

 

Professor Cheeseman earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Marquette University, both a master’s in business administration (MBA) and a master’s in business taxation (MBT) from the University of Southern California, a juris doctor (JD) degree from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Law, a master’s degree with an emphasis on law and economics from the University of Chicago, and a master’s in law (LLM) degree in financial institutions law from Boston University.

 

Professor Cheeseman was director of the Legal Studies in Business Program at the University of Southern California. Professor Cheeseman taught business law, legal environment, and ethics courses in both the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and undergraduate programs of the Marshall School of Business of the University of Southern California. At the MBA level, he developed and taught courses on corporate governance, securities regulation, mergers and acquisitions, and bankruptcy law. At the undergraduate level, he taught courses on business law, the legal environment of business, ethics, business organizations, cyber law, and intellectual property.

 

Professor Cheeseman received the Golden Apple Teaching Award on many occasions by being voted by the students as the best professor at the Marshall School of Business of the University of Southern California. He was named a fellow of the Center for Excellence in Teaching at the University of Southern California by the dean of the Marshall School of Business. The USC’s Torch and Tassel Chapter of the Mortar Board, a national senior honor society, tapped Professor Cheeseman for recognition of his leadership, commitment, and excellence in teaching.

 

Professor Cheeseman writes leading business law and legal environment textbooks that are published by Pearson Education, Inc. These include Business Law: Legal Environment, Online Commerce, Business Ethics, and International Issues; Contemporary Business Law; and The Legal Environment of Business and Online Commerce. Professor Cheeseman has also co- authored a textbook entitled Contemporary Employment Law.

All three levels of this text are superlative self-study resources

The Vocabulary Power series may be used in the classroom, of course, but these three books also seem ideal for motivated intermediate or advanced ESL learners to use at home. Each of the 30 sections of each text exposes a student to 10 new academic words, for a total of 300 words in all. The vocabulary is graduated in difficulty from the first to the third book, so there are 900 core words in the entire series.

The words in each section are presented in 10 different contexts: 1) using context to comprehend meanings, 2) matching vocabulary to definitions, 3) answering multiple-choice questions using the words, 4) categorizing them as parts of speech, 5) presenting alternate meanings, 6) inserting vocabulary into sentences, 7) learning collocations and idioms, and 8, 9, and 10) employing the words in readings, discussion, and writing. There are review tests every three chapters and a complete index. A separate answer key may be purchased for each book.

Repeated exposure to new vocabulary is essential both for understanding and retention, so this program is effective as well as superbly designed. If a student works his or her way through the whole series, he or she will have acquired not only 900 high-frequency words essential to high school and college proficiency but also at least as many related words. As an ESL instructor with over 25 years of teaching experience, I recommend it highly.

About the Author

Charles Platt is a Contributing Editor and regular columnist for Make magazine, where he writes about electronics. He is the author of the highly successful introductory hands-on book, Make:Electronics, and is writing a sequel to that book in addition to volumes 2 and 3 of the Encyclopedia of Electronic Components.

Platt was a Senior Writer for Wired magazine, and has written various computer books. As a prototype designer, he created semi-automated rapid cooling devices with medical applications, and air-deployable equipment for first responders. He was the sole author of four mathematical-graphics software packages, and has been fascinated by electronics since he put together a telephone answering machine from a tape recorder and military-surplus relays at age 15. He lives in a Northern Arizona wilderness area, where he has his own workshop for prototype fabrication and projects that he writes about for Make magazine.

Another excellent reference book in the series!

We finally got this book after it sat pre-ordered in our Amazon cart for a year and a half! Check out the extensive preview in the product description to see if it is what you are looking for. Platt gives a very good description of the purpose of the book when he writes that "...this is a reference book, not a tutorial.," and explains that each entry is made to stand on its own so information may be repeated in other sections. He also states that it is "oriented toward practicality rather than theory."
Typical chapters include sections telling you (with words, diagrams, and photos):
"What it Does"
"Symbol Variants" (diagrams showing different schematic symbols used)
"How it Works"
"How to Use it"
"Variants" (Similar components and also if it comes in surface-mount, etc)
"Values" (Numbers associated with it such as amp rating, etc.)
"What Can Go Wrong" (Things you might screw up when working with the component. Very helpful!)

Some entries also have information telling you the pros and cons to using one component over another.

We use the book as an educational source for me (Non-Science degree) and as a refresher for my husband (Electrical Engineering degree) and it helps us to figure out the best components to use in our own electronics projects. Lots of pictures and figures to reference.

Excellent reference book and I will again be waiting for the third book! I used to poke fun at all the people who would moan about George R.R. Martin doing anything except finishing his series, but I had to check myself when I had thoughts of doing a Google Alert for this author to make sure he was still writing books!

As an aspiring electrical engineer these books have been an unbelievable asset. I have been absolutely blown away by some of the electrical components that are defined in this series. Quite literally I have never heard of some of these parts. The knowledge that this series has available is easily beyond the scope of almost any other book on engineering I have ever read. The parts defined in this book will prove invaluable in the future and I hope to learn more in the future from Mr. Platt and co.

Great intro into electronic components and how they work..

I just love paging thru it reading about all of the electronic components, how they work, and some simple circuts with them as examples. If you are a fixer or tinkerer and aren't strong in electronics or electrical theory, then do yourself a favor and buy this 3 volume set. Wiring a power transistor incorrectly makes for a loud noise and things flashing! If you consider yourself a Maker, then you need this!

one of today's best business books

What's all this nonsense about not being able to stand up and take credit for the great work you do in the workplace? It's a lesson most of learned back in grade school where we were considered impolite for making it known that we were instrumental in the completion of a project or that we had won at something over someone else. Today's young women, I hope, are learning that it's okay to lead. And for the rest of us, those who don't quite know how to stand up without feeling guilty about it, there's Brag!: How to Toot Your Own Horn Without Blowing It.

This book provides not only research in the hows and whys women find it difficult to take credit, but also real-world solutions for how to tackle the problem. Take for example, the issue one woman had who needed to prepare herself quickly for a performance evaluation. This woman had no files or records of her accomplishments, yet the author was able to help this woman map out an action plan. To find out what that plan was, read the book. It could help you, too.

Though the author speaks a great deal about the issues women face in taking credit for their accomplishments, she does also acknowledge that some men suffer from this problem as well. Klaus provides examples of both men and women who have learned how to "brag" and come out on top.
