Whereas the two approaches are usually defended or criticized on the basis that they are dangerous for our vision of ourselves, this book takes a different perspective: it questions the acuteness of these approaches. Darwinian theory is not like a dangerous wolf, hunting for our self image. Far from it, in the case of the two analogical applications addressed in this book, Darwinian theory is shown to behave more like a disoriented sheep in wolf's clothing.

Rigorous Critique

I did a year long honors project on memetics as part of my bachelor's degree in philosophy. I found this book to be extremely helpful.

Maria Kronfeldner provides an excellent critique of Susan Blackmore, Daniel Dennett, and Richard Dawkins. Her nuanced analysis of memetics is impeccable. Even though I disagree with Kronfeldner on a few points, I have generally adopted her framework for thinking about memetics. I certainly am convinced by many of her arguments against the mentalist school of memetics.

If you are a serious scholar in the field, this is a must-have. Unlike a lot of the "fast and loose" descriptions of memetics that are scattered around in semi-popular literature, this book is a rigorous, scholarly analysis of a complicated subject. I highly recommend it.

About the Author
Hans Gustav Adolf Gross (December 12, 1847, Graz - December 9, 1915, Graz) was an Austrian criminal jurist and an examining magistrate. He is believed to be the creator of the field of criminalistics and is to this day seen as the father of Criminal Investigation; he taught as a professor at the Chernivtsi University, Prague University and the University of Graz. He was also the father of the Austrian psychoanalyst Otto Gross.

The volume of teaching, training and research activities in the field of MOR at military schools and non-military schools enhanced considerably. Military executives and commanders started taking increasing interest in getting scientific answers to questions pertaining to weapon acquisition, threat perception and quantification, assessment of damage or casualties, evaluation of chance of winning a battle, force mix, deployment and targeting of weapons against enemy targets, war games and scenario evaluation. Most of these problems were being tackled on the basis of intuition, judgment and experience or analysis under very simple assumptions. In an increasingly sophisticated and complex defense scenario resulting in advances in equipment and communications, the need for supplementing these practices by scientific research in MOR became imperative.

Land Power Military Operations Research

Jaiswal provides the most recent land power-focused military operations research volume. He provides a basic survey of the field, beginning with a very brief discussion of the origins of OR in the military. His topics include search and detection, military simulation, cost effectiveness analysis, optimization, the Analytic Hierarchy Process, Lanchester equations, and a quantified approach to intelligence analysis. The reader should be aware that his coverage of various specific military simulation models is a bit dated, as one should expect in a book, and limited in scope. Beyond that topic, his treatment is broad and therefore less sensitive to the passage of time. The book is a survey, so depth of treatment is not present. But it fills the intended role of pulling together disparate topics of land-based military OR. It also provides some perspective on non NATO defense issues. It must be challenging to decide what to exclude, but surprisingly there is no coverage of network flows, queuing theory, decision analysis, or game theory which have clear military applications. The focus is also on operations rather than the logistics of military analysis.

Excellent and Only Text on Military OR

This book is by far the only book that comprehensively deals with Military Operations Research (MOR). The OR/SA field despite its origins in Military Operations has not seen as many books and texts as the business OR or Theory of OR. This can be attributed to the confidential nature of work the practitioners of MOR carry out.
The book by Dr Jaiswal fills a huge gap by covering major areas of MOR field. What is really appreciable about this book is that the author covers areas such as analytical modeling, simulation, wargames to complex theories of Combat Modeling as reflected in two chapters on Lanchester Theory. However the icing on the cake are the chapters on Strategic Decision Making and Threat analysis. The coverage is comprehensive and remarkably lucid. To include so much variation and to control the overflow that normally happens to knowledgable authors, Dr Jaiswal is able to give us a book that will serve the cause of MOR field for years to come. The book has already shown its importance and is already on its way to becoming a classic, as exemplified by adoption of the book in various universities teaching MOR around the world.
This reviewer salutes the author for coming out with an excellent text which fills up a yawning gap in the field.

Memories Abound In This Book

Larry Lehmer's hardcover book entitled "The Day the Music Died" gives a very detailed review of the ill-fated Winter Dance Party in which Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. Richardson, aka "The Big Bopper" took part. If you would like to read a more concise version of these three singers I would strongly suggest you buy a copy of the paperback copy of "Behind the Music: The Day the Music Died." This book contains 122 pages and includes numerous pictures of the singers in addition to the crash site. Comments from family members and those who were close to the singers make up the prose of the book leading to accuracy in what they say. I read the book in three sittings. Make sure you have time when you sit down to read it because you will want to continue. I intend to order numerous additional copies to give as gifts to friends. Many thanks to authors Martin Huxley and Quinton Skinner for putting the book together.

This is an excellent book to own, if you are a Buddy Holly fan. Very fast reading. You will not want to put this book down.
Black & white photos. The best photos were put in this book. You will have to remember back when Buddy was popular, and remember it was black & white photos.
Makes you wonder, what his music would sound like now. I can only imagine. He paved the way for all music now.

For my recent birthday, my mom bought me a copy of this book. She didn't want to spend too much, and although I was skeptical at first, I actually enjoyed it. I was very surprised at how well the text flowed, considering there is just so much separate commentary throughout the course of it. As strange as it may seem, this event just fascinates me, and this book was a good source of information. ....

a book that charts its own course

This is an odd book but I admire the author for taking a unique approach to teaching high school physics.

It's odd because it does not have traditional chapters. It has 100 lessons which the author says should be covered at a rate of 3-4 per week over 2 semesters. The various topics like mechanics, electricity, optics have not been put in any specific order. This means logically related topics are scattered throughout the book. Pedagogically, I've never seen anything like this attempted before. I'd like to see the educational research that supports this approach.

I disagree that this book should be covered in 2 semesters. A full 4 semester (2 year) program is needed if this material is to be completed at a reasonable and comprehensible pace when combined with lab experiments.

The discussion of the basic phenomena is quite short in most cases. The author quickly jumps into problem solving which is at the heart of this book. The problems to be mastered are traditional: projectiles, sliding blocks on inclined planes, springs, vectors, friction, rotary motion, banked curves, simple machines and so on. They're more challenging than what's found in the average high school textbook. They would be a good preparation for the non-calculus AP test. However, they do not show enough variety. Learning is not promoted if students aren't challenged with problem types they've never seen before.

The author recycles questions from previous lessons throughout. These are sometimes made more difficult by adding newly covered material - hence the word "Incremental" in the title. Given that the lesson sequence is almost random, the problem sets quickly turn into a strange, motley collection of unrelated topics.

This book could be profitably combined with something like "Understanding Physics" by Cassidy et al. so as to thoroughly cover both concepts and problem solving.

Some of the material is not really high school physics at all. For instance, I never encountered the sections on thermodynamics and fluid mechanics until university.

One thing I can't figure out is just who the intended audience is. The inside front cover has space for assigning book to high school students. The preface then says the topics covered are what you'd see in a 2-semester engineering physics course and also says book is suitable for pre-med students. Well, is this a high school book or a university book?

After reading through it I can unequivocally say it's not for the average high school student. At a minimum only honors or well-motivated high school students should attempt it.

So while I cannot recommend this book as a classroom text it is a very good resource for teachers especially for its clear approach to certain derivations and its emphasis on problem solving.

Rote learning, but in the best way possible

It's funny how most traditional teachers don't like this method, but at the same time, I always hear the "practice makes perfect" lecture. With the Saxon books there's no shortage of practice opportunities. My whole problem with traditional methods is that everything is blocked into chapters. So if you're doing stuff on electromagnetism, it's easy to forget the earlier material on classical physics. With Saxon you're practicing more than one topic at a time, so you get used to holding more skills in your head. The other problem I have with traditional methods is that there are maybe 3 or 4 problems that represent each skill, and I feel like I just skim over the concept and it just doesn't "stick" as well. It could just be me and my horrible memory, but I do find that the repetition really helps me internalize the concepts. There's also the notion that this method doesn't allow for conceptual learning. I found the exact opposite to be true. Because I had so much practice, I was able to apply alot of these concepts to the outside world.

This the clearest, best physics book I have seen. Each lesson reviews every skill previously taught to aid in retention of concepts and skills. I recommend it very highly.

But, as Kurt Weyland argues, policymakers apply inferential shortcuts at the risk of distortions and biases. Through an in-depth analysis of pension and health reform in Bolivia, Brazil, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Peru, Weyland demonstrates that decision-makers are captivated by neat, bold, cognitively available models. And rather than thoroughly assessing the costs and benefits of external models, they draw excessively firm conclusions from limited data and overextrapolate from spurts of success or failure. Indications of initial success can thus trigger an upsurge of policy diffusion.
