Well-paced if antiquated

Like many of Michael Lewis' latter-day works, Liar's Poker is engaging, dissecting the birth of mortgage bonds and the dissolution of one of the 80s Wall Street's top earners. It's easy to catch the strokes of his later works in the descriptions of people and his wonkish simplification of the complexities of the financial markets.

Notwithstanding the novel's expert skewering of the Salomon Brothers' culture and the well-traced rise of what would one day become mortgage-backed securities, the greatest pleasure of the novel is the fall of the many Wall Street giants Lewis lauds that are now upon the dust heap of history. He calls out Lehman Brothers early on, giving us the chance to savor the irony that Salomon collapsed well before Lehman. The men that Lewis saw working as a junior employee at Salomon sowed the seeds of 2008 financial collapse, and with that firmly in our hindsight, Liar's Poker is a fantastic portrait of the very genesis of the rot that brought us low almost a decade ago.

My takeaways

Michael Lewis is very funny to go along with his insight into how the financial world works. Here are some major takeaways for me:

[1] Solomon Brothers showed excessive greed and always placed the firms interests above those of their customers and rich customers treat the bond [and stock] market like a casino. Middle class people who need a decent return to retire muddle along but the market rises and falls precipitously on the gambling mentality of the rich.

[2] Previous to 1980 bond markets were unregulated so when junk bonds were invented [and bond prices became volatile like stocks] it was not illegal to trade bonds on insider information. Traders will always be more nimble than government regulations and the system will always favor the dishonest few.

[3] At the end in his conclusions, he says that the principals at Solomon will remain "fat and happy". To me that is an oxymoron. They operate on the principal that money is everything. If it were true the US would be the happiest country in the world because it has the highest GNP. Fat people are unhealthy and being healthy and taking care of oneself is at least as important as being rich.

Also if a person is rich enough to buy five houses, he can only be in one place at a time...just like a poor person. If a person is impoverished, more money will make him happier. But after a person has enough money for all his needs, more money doesn't increase happiness. People who realize this can become truly happy.

I liked Michael Lewis’ book “The Big Short”, so I decided to read his earlier book “Liars Poker”. “The Big Short” was especially interesting (dramatic, even) because it talks about the Great Recession (that is still so fresh in my mind). In comparison “Liars Poker” talks about Lewis’ early career in finance back in the early-to-mid 1980’s. So “Liars Poker” was less exciting than “The Big Short”, but it was more “broad brush” – and so more insightful about the basic workings of the Wall Street companies. This book destroys any myth that Wall Street is successful when they make their investor clients successful; Wall Street can be just as successful when dumping their losing investments by recommending those same “investments” to their ignorant, hapless clients. The book’s biggest lesson for the investor is “caveat emptor”. “Liars Poker” is humorous, eye-opening, disheartening, instructive – and entertaining.

Dated but still good.

This book looks at the Berlin Blockade, an attempt by the USSR to consolidate its power in eastern Germany. The Soviets hoped that by cutting off the French, British and American zones from the rest of West Germany it would force the western allies to abandon West Berlin to the communists. This book provides some great information on the causes of the Cold War confrontation, the conduct of the Berlin Airlift, life under siege, the East German Uprising of 1953 and the construction of the Berlin Wall. The author argues that the clumsy attempt to grab Berlin actually led to the establishment of West Germany. This book includes lots of excellent photos as well as some great drawings of aircraft used during the airlift. The only flaw in this book is the occasional typo.

An excellent introduction to one of the most amazing stories of the Cold War, and a model on achieving victory without bloodshed

McDonald Publishing and the Imperial War Museum teamed up back in the late 1960s and early 1970s to publish this tight series of illustrated paperbacks on the history of World War I, World War II (and a few other conflicts of the 20th century), which were picked up by Ballantine in the United States. They were all divided into subjects: battles, campaigns, weapons, war leaders, politics in action, human conflict, and regalia, by color bands on the bottom, enjoying common editing and artwork, and a fairly common collection of well-known historians. They cost $1 at the time (a good deal of money) and a lot more now (being out of print).

The series as a whole is slightly outdated by the disclosures from Allied codebreaking, and suffered from being whipped together in a hurry, but they remain then and now a fine introduction to conflict in the 20th century -- if you can find them.

The Soviet blockade of Berlin was a cruel and cynical attempt to force the Allies to yield power in their three zones of the occupied City to Moscow, by trying to starve and freeze the Berliners into surrender or revolt. The determination of the British and American governments to feed the Berliners without starting a third World War was a major victory for democracy and a defeat for Soviet expansionism. The Berlin airlift required creativity and ingenuity, and the Americans and British provided plenty of both in the effort. Ultimately the Soviets saw the point and yielded.

This book covers the history of Berlin, the blockade, and its weird state of occupation and as an outpost of democracy in a Communist sea fro 1945 to 1971, focusing heavily on the blockade. The chapters on the airlift are rich with material about how it was operated and organized, and have considerable interesting and amusing material on how the Anglo-Americans found creative ways to solve problems. Sunderland flying boats hauled salt to Berlin, coming alight on lakes in the British Zone, for example. A legendary expert at using dismantling torches was found in Wyoming, flown to Germany, and he established a school that taught such artisans to take apart machinery, load them in planes, and re-assemble them in Berlin. The story of Gale Halvorsen, the "Candy Aviator" and the "Schmoo" packages are told.

Also are some amusing stories: the difficulties airmen had with the differing American and British movie theater operations, which alternated every night. Three days a week, airmen paid a flat rate to sit where they liked in the theater. Three days a week, they paid different prices in British currency and were ushered to their seats. Doubtless all hands enjoyed the German variety show and its frauleins on the seventh night. Numerous former Luftwaffe personnel went back to work as mechanics -- some had several "kills" as flak gunners during the war.

After the airlift's victory, tensions rose again, with an unsuccessful revolt in East Berlin and the construction of the Wall in 1961. The book ends in 1971, with the wall a seemingly permanent and enduring fact, which at least, in the author's eyes, prevents further tension leading to war. Less than 20 years later, the wall and East Germany fell, and now that wall is either a jogging path, a memorial, or the hottest real estate in Europe. Nor is there much from the Soviet side of the blockade, which might have been interesting.

However, the lack of a resolution to the book is the least of its problems. John Man's prose is entertaining and crisp. The photographs are up to the usual Ballantine standard.

This book is an excellent introduction to one of the most amazing stories of the Cold War, and a model on achieving victory without bloodshed.

Having served in West Berlin in the 1970s, I found this book a great source of information on the creation of the occupied city, as well as the political impact of the blockade itself. Good maps and background on the city and area around the city.
